While there was a huge amount of hype built up around the launch of Nintendo’s “next-gen” console, the Wii U, it certainly hasn’t played out the way the game company had hoped. Sales of the console are on a steady track as of right now but are still far below what Nintendo had expected. Despite the slow growth, the company still refuses to lower the price of the unit.

Many speculate the reason for the Wii U’s sales falter is due to the lack of big-name titles available. Aside from Black Ops 2, Just Dance 4, New Super Mario Bros. U and a few other titles, the system is deprived of any real forerunners. Upcoming games such as LEGO City: Undercover and Pikmin 3 could revive excitement for this new generation of Nintendo consoles but these titles aren’t expected to release for another month or so.
A price reduction seems to be the logical thing to do in this scenario but, unfortunately, Nintendo refuses to budge. This could be perceived as an act of greed or it could be the company saving face by not allowing the public to think Nintendo is worried about it’s latest gaming endeavor.
Will the Wii U live up to the success of its predecessor? Only time will tell but so far the future looks bleak. Most people already associate the Nintendo franchise with only family and children’s games which, generally, drives hardcore gamers away to other consoles. While the original Wii was a great success many people have grown tired of it and the Wii U doesn’t seem like much of an improvement over the old console.
What do you think? Do you believe the Wii U will come out of this sales slump to become a great selling unit like its predecessor? Will new, better-known game titles help to get more consoles off the shelves? Drop your comments below and let us know!
