Halo 4, the first of a new trilogy in the world renown Xbox 360 game series, was launched just under a week ago on November 6th. Within the first 24 hours of being released the title racked up $220 million in sales. This is the biggest launch ever for the Halo series beating out even the great success of both Halo 3 and Halo Reach. H4 is on the path to becoming one of the best selling games of the franchise.
Popular news blog, Examiner, had this to say about the launch:
By our rough calculations, this means that Halo 4 sold over 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours and is on track for approximately 5 million in the first week. Over 4 million players logged on to Xbox LIVE to play the game in the first five days racking up over 31.4 million hours. (source)
With these number the overall lifetime sales of the entire Halo franchise is now nearly $3.4 billion. That says quite a bit for the success of this game series. The original trilogy, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3 were all developed by Bungie but the latest titles in the series, namely Halo Reach and Halo 4, were developed by the new owners of the franchise, 343 Industries.
H4 has already received many rave reviews from the most respected sources in the gaming industry. This includes a 9.8 rating from IGN, an 87 on MetaCritic and a 4 1/2 star rating from GamesRadar. This game is sure to go down as one of the best games of 2012. The only real challenger left to come this year is the highly anticipated launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which is set for release on November 13th.
