About FFXIV: ARR
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, sometimes shortened to just FFXIV: ARR, is a from Square Enix. The game is available on the PC, PS3, and PS4 gaming consoles. This is actually a remake of the original (Final Fantasy XIV) which came out back in September of 2010.
Unfortunately, the game was so poorly designed and received so many bad reviews that it completely failed. A Realm Reborn is an entirely new game built on a new engine, using better servers, has vastly different gameplay mechanics, and many other improvements.
This game has been in development for quite some time now but is due to release on August 27th of this year. The first alpha testing finished up toward the end of 2012.
The final and open beta started yesterday (August 16th) and will finish this coming up Monday (8/19). If youre interested in participating in the open beta you can do so by registering for a Square Enix account and then downloading the official game client.

FFXIV plays like pretty much any other MMO out there. As with other titles, in the beginning of the game you’ll have to create your character by choosing a race, a class (which is currently limited to either a Disciple of War or a Disciple or Magic, other classes become available later in the game), general appearance, character name, and so on.
Progression is achieved in the same manner as any other major MMO like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, players must work their way through various quests, explore dungeons, participate in events, and get kills to earn XP to level up their character.
Dungeons consist of two types: a lower level type designed to help new players gain a lot of experience fast, and a higher level type to help endgame players grind for valuable gear and even more XP. Both are instanced and require a group (party) to participate in a dungeon run.
As of right now there are 2 PvP gametypes. The primary PvP involves playing in arenas where players can challenge each other to 1 v 1 matches or even team vs team fights. The other PvP type is found in the open world where players can openly attack and take on other players that dare to venture into the designated PvP areas. This is very similar to how a much more basic MMO, Runescape, operates.
In total there are several different playable races found in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. During the character creation process you’ll notice that each race has 2 different versions that have slightly different appearances plus a male and a female version to choose from.
Here are the races:
The Hyur and Lalafell are both human-like in appearance. The Elezen are most similar to elves. The Roegadyn are a bulky, intimidating-looking race. And, finally, the Miqote are supposed to be a hybrid of human and cat and possess pointy ears and a tail.

FFXIV: ARR Classes
The class system found in A Realm Reborn is a bit different and can be a bit confusing to new players. The entire thing is referred to as the Armory System. How it works is that all classes are put into general classifications. There are 4 classifications which are called the Disciplines of War, Disciplines of Magic, Disciplines of the Hand, and Disciplines of the Land.
Disciplines of War
As the name implies, the Disciplines of War classification encompasses all classes that are proficient in physical combat. The classes that fall under this category are:
Most of these classes are best suited for melee-based combat or just for non-magical fighting in general.
Disciplines of Magic
Again, as the name implies, the Disciplines of Magic includes all FFXIV: ARR classes that are designed for magic-based combat. The classes that fall under this category are:
Conjurers are primarily a healing (or in other words, support) based class. Thaumaturge are best known for their ability to use destructive black magic to tame their foes. And, finally, Arcanists are summoners that are able to call upon magical creatures to fight by their side.
Disciplines of the Hand
The Disciplines of the Hand classes are those that are most useful in crafting. These classes are for those that wish to create a range of items including potions, armor, weapons, food-based boosts, and so on. Here are the classes found within this category:
We’ll discuss more about crafting in another article.
Disciplines of the Land
The Disciplines of the Land is essentially just a title for any of the gathering-based classes. These include:
As with crafting, well be talking a lot more about gathering in later posts.
That pretty much sums up the general basics of the game. Well be going into a lot more detail for everything related to PvE, PvP, dungeons, classes, crafting, and more in future posts.
Is ARR Really Better?
As we mentioned before, the original FFXIV was not a great game. It had many, many flaws that absolutely ruined playing it. And that is why the game received such terrible reviews and hate from the MMORPG community.
Based on impressions A Realm Reborn really has improved greatly on the game and made it a much more enjoyable MMO, one that Final Fantasy fans can definitely be proud of. Hopefully the full launch game is just as good if not better than the open beta.
