Defiance In-Depth: Overview of Multiplayer Aspects

Defiance seems to be taking massively multiplayer online gaming to an entirely new level. Trion Worlds has stated that some matchmaking games will support over 100 players at the same time. That’s huge for a game that is going to be on consoles as well as the PC. Since the game is yet to be launched, there is growing curiosity among enthusiasts and avid gamers as to what precisely Defiance multiplayer is going to be like.

Defiance Multiplayer

Here are three small snippets that are integral to the entire premise:

The Future Bay Area

The area where most of the multiplayer occurs is set in is the San Francisco Bay Area. Only, it is in the future where the all powerful billionaires control every facet of the society and for them to remain in power and capable of growing their riches, they must hire the services of professionals who could win them the small battles and the larger war. These professionals are known as Ark Hunters who are contracted by businessmen on an ongoing basis.

Each player or gamer would get to become an Ark Hunter and their success as well as points would be based on how many contracts they can accomplish successfully. With more contracts being acquired and completed, the reputation of the Ark Hunters receives a boost. Along with the increased reputation, the Ark Hunters also get more contracts, rewards, new weapons and better and more state of the art gear.

Varied Challenges

Defiance Multiplayer is not going easy when it comes to bringing in variance to the game. There are various terrains, maps that you have not yet explored in any game and the kind of combat that Ark Hunters are supposed to engage in is brutal, chaotic and a ground to prove only two things – survival and superiority. The various types of weapons, gears, settings and different kinds of combats including single player battles and team wars, make for an intriguing battlefield.

Team Deathmatch

This is by far the most common multiplayer gametype found in nearly every online game. In Defiance, it’s pretty standard. Two teams consisting of 8 Ark Hunters each compete in an all out to-the-death match. Players are capable of using any weapon, EGO skill, or equipment they possess. This makes for interesting, yet challenging, gameplay. The only drawback (in the beta, at least) was that higher level players had a lot better gear to play with. Heading into one of these matches with a simple assault rifle and shotgun is not a wise move. A lot of players are equipped with rocket launchers and high-powered, alien-tech rifles capable of killing you very quickly.

The Shadow War

On top of everything else that happens within the Defiance storyline there is an ongoing Shadow War. The Ark Hunters who sign up for the Shadow War are known as Shadow Operatives. These players are an extension of the private military organization, Echelon. Players form a team to repossess fallen ark-techs and more than one team will be battling to win over each ark-tech. The maps for this are huge and support many players. Teams compete for control over the arkfalls which act as objective points that players must capture and defend.

The spoils of war are great. After each match of Shadow War players have a chance to receive Echelon credits. This unique form of currency can be used to purchase special items not found in PvE gameplay such as advanced weaponry and armor.
